Case statements for donor support can be tricky, especially when the goal is to build a freestanding children’s hospital whose architecture will represent the state of Louisiana. We had 16 pages to tell donors we understand kids and their health needs, and to show that the new hospital will reflect our state’s culture and ecosystems. Aiming for “sophisticated whimsy,” we combined touching photographs with custom-illustrated animals and watercolor renderings of local scenery. Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital was so pleased, it asked me to art direct the interior of the actual building, and the animals will be part of the way-finding system.
